NOTES:  The earliest reported error, freak or oddity on US postal stationery is an albino 3¢ (red) on buff, Nesbitt first issue.  The early Nesbitt envelopes were printed on machines that would print a stamp, apply gum to the flap, and fold the envelope leading to the creation of albinos and of envelopes with a “second” albino impression with the printed stamp (actually the albino impression occurred first and then the envelope blank was reprinted to receive an inked impression).  Multiple impressions also first occurred during the Nesbitt first issue.  Cost conscious printers would re-cut faulty envelope blanks to a smaller size for reuse.  This re-cutting of envelope blanks occasionally left all or part of the first stamp printing behind creating multiple impressions.  The earliest reported double impression (one normal, one albino) occurs on the 1863 Nesbitt issue 2¢ black, Jackson, die 25 (Scott type U20), on orange paper.  The Reay issue gives us our first mis-strike (stamp in any position except the normal position; we might also consider this to be miscut and/or misfolded) on the 2¢ brown on amber, Jackson, die 36 (Scott type U24).  Miscut and misfolded envelopes are freaks.  A double envelope (one or more envelopes folded inside of an outer envelope) is reported for the 1884 2¢ brown on white.  Doubled envelopes have been observed with as many as four envelopes folded together.  Multiple images have been observed with as many as seven full or partial stamp imprints.  Most mis-cut postal cards have been created by dealers or collectors although there are a few legitimate (and valuable) genuine miscut postal cards.  Other EFO types include damaged dies (or plates) and damaged watermarks (resulting from damaged Dandy rolls used in the papermaking process).  CAUTION:  Many so called damaged (cracked) die varieties, especially on the circular die Washington-Franklin envelopes, are merely a pinch in the paper caused by the embossing process.
